How To Stay Motivated: 12 Strategies for Entrepreneurs (2023)

Staying motivated is a challenge at the best of times.

As entrepreneurs face ongoing uncertainty, enemies of motivation—procrastination, fear, imposter syndrome—lurk everywhere. With experience, however, you acquire skills, inspiration, and methods that help keep motivation high, even through tough times.

What motivates us is intensely personal, which is even more true for entrepreneurs. There are fewer sources of external motivation (like a boss’s deadlines or employee payroll), and as you create a business out of nothing, there’s more reliance on being self-motivated.

How do you summon that self-motivation? What motivates you to move toward your goals, even when you’re facing challenges? And how do you motivate a team? Learn how to stay motivated on your way to success with advice and strategies from founders and creators.

Why is motivation so important?

A woman sits on a set of pink stairs doodling in a notebook

Motivation is directly tied to your “why.” If you’re building a business and you don’t understand your reason for doing it, motivation is likely to be in short supply. Finding your unique source of motivation—whether it’s staying connected to your “why” or the promise of reward when you meet your goals—is critical to entrepreneurs, especially in the early stages.

Draw from that well of inspiration to gain motivation when sales are low or stress is high. Motivation turns positive thinking and good feelings into energy and action.

Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation comes from within and is generally derived from an interest or passion for the task itself, not necessarily a tangible reward. A curiosity for learning, growth, experience, and achievement is often enough to push those who are intrinsically motivated to accomplish their goals.

Extrinsic motivation is based on external factors like the promise of a tangible reward—money, a treat—upon completion of a task. Avoidance of potential negative consequences from not completing a task can also be considered extrinsic motivation.

How to stay motivated: 12 effective strategies

To uncover some of the unique ways people find motivation, we asked entrepreneurs and creatives: “What keeps you motivated?” Ahead, read their strategies, and additional ones, to help you build daily routines, stay focused, and achieve success.

1. Access passion

Some may be motivated by the love of a craft or an interest. If you see yourself as someone who values creative fulfillment at work over status or money, pursue a career or business idea that scratches that itch. Alternatively, start a passion project on the side. Rune Madsen, an engineer at Shopify, stays motivated with “projects around the house to keep me busy and learning away from a computer.”

When pursuing a business idea, ask yourself, “Does this make me happy?” If the answer is no, it’s possible that you’ll always struggle with motivation. If you’re looking to start a business, for example, pick an idea based on something you’re already motivated to do. “I’ve finally learned that I should do things that feel good instead of things that look or sound good but make me feel bad,” says master’s student Lily Rogers.

2. Be goal oriented

A persona stands in a sprinting position, ready to run

The promise of reaching a goal—a new sales target, a promotion, fitness goals—can help you stay motivated, especially if you set those goals with a measurable and attainable plan. Content designer Ibrahim Hasan stays motivated to reach goals by “checking things off a list. It sounds superficial, but I love a finished to-do list.”

Establish clear goals and post reminders of them around you. Develop daily routines that drive toward them. If those goals ever become hazy, you could lose motivation. Revisit them to keep them sharp in your mind, and tweak as needed.

3. Meet basic needs

Basic needs may be a secure financial future, supporting your family, or protecting your mental health. For Jessica Blaine Smith, an independent photographer, money is a big motivator: “As a self-employed person, I need it to keep afloat.”

Understanding your needs will help you reframe other tasks or activities within the context of your central goals. For example, if you tend to neglect your emotional needs in favor of getting work done, flip the narrative. Taking a night off with friends to meet those emotional needs could actually give you more motivation and perspective at work.

4. Eliminate distractions

A woman is working on a laptop while a dog stands in her way licking her faceTo feel motivated in your everyday life, it might be as simple as surrounding yourself with things that make you feel inspired. But you’ll also need to remove anything that doesn’t. Distractions can include spending time on projects or pursuits that don’t ladder up to your main goal.

However, while tangents and distractions are the enemy of motivation, so is monotony. Create “engineered distractions,” or opportunities to experience the novelty of something new within a current project. Can you learn a different way to complete a task?

5. Tackle procrastination at its root

If motivation is a struggle, it may be caused by another issue: procrastination. When you lose interest in a task or dread starting what feels insurmountable, procrastination can take hold. Understand the reasons for your procrastination to help overcome it—and gain motivation.

For example, if your to-do list is packed with complicated projects, break them out into smaller chunks and build in mini rewards. Getting a few things done can motivate you to tackle the rest.

6. Create a motivating workspace

A wall with a geometric shelving unit packed with decor and framed artTo accomplish your goals, you may be spending long nights at your computer or in your home office. Make that space a reflection of what brings you joy and reminds you of your end goal. This could be as simple as adding plants to your home office design, rearranging furniture for optimal flow, or decorating with your favorite motivational quotes or a vision board.

7. Practice positive visualization

If you’re a dreamer—and this is true of many entrepreneurs—practice visualizing your ideal future. What does it look like to be truly fulfilled? When you achieve your goals, how does it feel? Positive visualization is a popular wellness strategy that involves using imagination to paint a picture of a desired future. This can be a motivating exercise, as it can help bring your goals into sharp focus.

Positive thinking will not, by itself, lead to an outcome, but is a first step in taking action and staying focused on your long-term goals. This technique has proven effective for athletes who, before competing, use visualization to gain confidence and overcome fear.

8. Be accountable to yourself or others

Two people sit at a laptop working togetherThe approval of others—say, making your kids proud or exceeding your customers’ expectations—can be a powerful motivator. Learn also to be accountable to yourself. “I think of ‘me’ as a team,” says marketer, podcaster, and business owner Liz Whiting, “and steps I take today set myself up for a layup and further autonomy in the future!”

For Amanda McIntosh, founder of Take My Face Off, a commitment to future generations is a motivator: “Every day, reading the news leads to worrying about the planet, which leads to working on my company.”

9. Banish complacency

Staying motivated for you may mean keeping things exciting. If you’re naturally drawn to action, go toward it and shake things up—even if everything is going your way. The excitement of chasing a new idea is a strong motivator. Push outside your normal tolerance for risk or step into the unknown for a little thrill to kick start motivation.

10. Seek external motivation

A woman sits at a computer browsing inspirational art images on a websiteExternal sources of motivation could be books, podcasts, a favorite meal, a meeting with a mentor, an inspirational quote, writing in a journal, motivation articles, positive feedback on your work, or music that uplifts you.

For musician, animal activist, and founder Nicole Simone, it’s focusing on “the realization that we have the most incredible technology and abilities to do so many awesome things that previous generations could only dream about.”

11. Strive for self-fulfillment or betterment

If you have a passion for learning or personal growth, build opportunities to do so in your everyday routine. You could also step away from work periodically to be rejuvenated by learning a new skill or investing in something you find personally fulfilling.

For writer and editor Sara Yin, motivation can be found in “the constant desire to improve or master a skill, be it technical or emotional.”

12. Remember the reward

A hand grabs a donut from a boxRewards that motivate look different for everyone. For you, it may be the promise of hitting a financial milestone; for others it’s going out to a favorite restaurant. Build rewards—and time to celebrate achievement—into your goal planning.

According to behavioral science experts, often the reward isn’t tangible, but instead a chemical reaction in our bodies. When we succeed, our brain triggers a dopamine response. This sensation (often referred to as a “rush”) can also be triggered in anticipation of the reward. After the first hit, our brains seek out this feeling, creating a feedback loop giving us the motivation to repeat actions that achieve it.

Staying motivated to reach your goals

You’ve cracked the code when you break old habits that sap motivation and develop daily routines that inspire and keep you on track. But it takes work. Focus on your goal, find your “why,” and fill your life with people who support your dream. Once you find your personal motivating force, success is right around the corner.

5 Traits Needed To Be An Entrepreneur in SA

Amidst record-high unemployment, especially amongst our country’s youth, entrepreneurship has never been more important. Yet as a 2020 study by the University of Stellenbosch Business School (UBS) revealed an alarming 49.8% of South Africans continue to fear failure, deterring them from taking the leap, becoming an entrepreneur and launching their own businesses.

This same study noted that only 60.4% of respondents believed that there were opportunities out there, and that they had the skills necessary to start and successfully run their own business.

To the contrary, however, after years of observing the enormous talent and untapped potential of South Africans for innovation, it is not a lack of opportunity but rather flawed mindsets that are preventing more individuals from realising their entrepreneurial potential.

As a country, we urgently need to address these mistaken attitudes, and work to instil more confidence in our youth if we are to achieve a thriving, job-creating economy.

In keeping with this, here are the five traits needed for an aspiring entrepreneur to achieve success:

1.Courage

You do not need thousands of rands to launch a business. Some of the world’s most successful businesses were founded on shoestring budgets in people’s garages, including the likes of Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. “In 2011, I founded my Human Capital and Facilities Management subcontracting company, with R500 in my pocket, and today the company employs over 36,000 staff across various industries,” says Arnoux Mare, CEO of Innovative Solutions Group.

Successful entrepreneurs do not wait until they have perfected their business ideas or product. Acting quickly to seize opportunities is more important, and you can improve your product or service offering as you go along.

2. Focus

One of the largest stumbling blocks for start-ups is losing focus on your core service and purpose. Financial graveyards are littered with businesses who tried to be everything to everyone, and instead failed to satisfy anyone. Define who your target market is, what unique need your business is fulfilling, and play to your strengths.

3. Agility

In today’s highly competitive environment, it is important to remain agile to any market trends and opportunities to stay ahead of the pack. Encourage innovation, and invite new ideas and suggestions for improvement from staff and clients. Simultaneously, don’t be afraid to adapt your strategy in response to learnings and developments. Be stubborn about achieving your goals, but flexible enough to adapt when things don’t work out as planned.

4. Willingness to listen

Great people make a great business, and a smart entrepreneur not only surround themselves with the best talent but are willing to listen to their input and be guided by their expertise. There’s a reason that your employees are there – and it’s not just to fill seats.

Successful leaders learn from the successes and failures of others. South Africa is full of brilliant entrepreneurs and experienced businesspeople who often offer free advice on social media or through webinars. Listen to what they have to say and implement their successes and lessons learnt in your business.

5. Self-discipline

Entrepreneurship is incredibly rewarding, but also demands your blood, sweat, and tears to be successful. Be prepared to work long hours as you build your client base while ensuring your operations run smoothly. You will also need the self-discipline to avoid procrastinating over difficult tasks, and to remain calm and work through stressful situations even when you are under pressure.

Finally, don’t be afraid of mistakes – the difference between an entrepreneur who succeeds and those who don’t is not failure, but rather the willingness to pick themselves up, brush themselves off, and persevere.  That’s how successful businesses are built.

20 Tricks to get the most out of your Twitter account

With about 238-million “monetisable daily active users”, Twitter may not be the world’s biggest social media platform, but it remains one of the most influential – especially when it comes to breaking news and sparking important conversations.

South Africa has about a tenth of those active accounts, with 2.85-million – a relatively small but vocal audience that can be harnessed to a brand’s benefit if approached strategically.

Here are 20 tips from Flow Communications for brands and individuals to optimise their Twitter accounts:

1. Tweet regularly

If you want to entrench an influential presence on Twitter and gain a decent following, you need to tweet often – at least once a day and ideally more often.

2. Tweet authentic content that is relevant to you or your brand

Bear in mind your brand’s personality – playful or serious, for example – and stick to that tone when tweeting. Select content strategically to suit your brand or business purpose.

3. Use pictures

Twitter – like Instagram – is a very visual medium, and all tweets should be accompanied by one or more images. Plus, you can tag up to 10 accounts in photos, extending the potential reach of your posts and getting conversations going.

4. Don’t bother (much) about video

While some video ads and viral videos might hit the mark on Twitter, for the most part video content fares poorly on this platform – and you can’t (yet) tag other accounts on videos.

5. Take note of trending hashtags

Up to 60% of a brand’s social media content should be planned, but leave space for unplanned or “tactical” content – monitoring trending hashtags and joining topical conversations, where relevant. Check out https://getdaytrends.com/ for the day’s top hashtags.

6. Find and converse with people on Twitter

Seek out accounts that mirror your interests (or tie in with your business’s activities) and join relevant conversations. Twitter chats are great for initiating conversations with like-minded brands and individuals, and for positioning yourself as an influencer in a particular sphere.

7. Connect via direct message

Struggling to get hold of someone? Pop them a DM (direct message). Chances are they’ll respond if they check their Twitter notifications and messages regularly.

8. Use Twitter analytics to ascertain your progress

Twitter has some great free analytics tools to help you determine which tweets are faring best and to get a handy overview of how your account is performing overall.

9. Proactively follow interesting people

Follow high-profile personalities and accounts that correlate with your interests and those of your business – who knows, they might just follow you back!

10. Respond when people @mention you

It’s polite and courteous to respond with a comment, a retweet or a like if people tag you in their tweets – unless it’s in a negative context, in which case you should divert the conversation to DMs. For outright racist or sexist comments, block the troll.

11. Use Twitter polls and ask questions

Twitter thrives on engagement, so make use of Twitter polls to ask simple questions of your followers. The polls are a great way to encourage interaction, especially with playful topics.

12. Come up with a hashtag for campaigns

Devise a short, simple and punchy hashtag for each campaign, so its performance is easily trackable. Check to make sure the hashtag is unique, so your results are campaign-specific.

13. Use Twitter threads for long-form content

Got more to say than 280 characters will allow? Use a Twitter thread – a series of successive tweets on the same post – to delve into a topic in more detail and depth.

14. Compile a content plan

Plan your Twitter content in advance each month, making provision for ad hoc or tactical posts as well. Devise content pillars to keep the mix lively, interesting and engaging for your followers while enhancing and promoting your brand.

15. Use defined hashtags for days of the week

People often think of Twitter as a negative platform, but it’s home to a lot of love, kindness and smiles, too. Tap into day-specific hashtags such as #MotivationMonday, #ThrowbackThursday, #FriYay and even #Caturday to harness those positive vibes.

16. Use Twitter ads sparingly

Unless you have deep enough pockets to do a Twitter buyout for the trend of the day, don’t waste your advertising budget on Twitter ads. In our experience, they seldom work. Rather put your digital spend behind other platforms.

17. Never tweet when drunk or angry

This might seem obvious, but remember that Twitter is a public platform and reputations can be destroyed very easily with just a single ill-conceived tweet.

18. Don’t be afraid to block people

If you’re being trolled, don’t waste any time – block, block, block! You can also mute certain accounts and words for a more pleasant and less anxiety-inducing Twitter timeline.

19. Create branded hashtags

If you have a particular offering you’d like to promote, create a branded hashtag for it. That way, people who are interested can easily find what they’re looking for simply by searching for it on Twitter.

20. Follow people back

Unless you are Elon Musk or King Charles III (and can therefore afford to ignore the plebs), if people follow you, follow them back. It’s a sign of courtesy and respect. Of course, if it’s very obviously a bot or fake account, ignore it.

A side hustle may be the solution during tough times

South Africans are looking to supplement their income by starting side hustles.

Johannesburg – Typically, successful people have multiple income streams and starting a side hustle is an excellent way of generating extra income.

With the high-interest rate, and the rising cost of fuel, food, and electricity it is becoming harder for most people to make ends meet with just their salaries. Many are looking to supplement their salaries by starting some type of entrepreneurial venture or side hustle.

The Henley business school defines ‘side hustlers’ as individuals having one or more of the following:

– A job and a business in different spheres

– A job and a side business in different spheres (including activities not perceived as formal businesses)

– A self-employed business and a ‘side business’ in different spheres

– Secondary job in a different sphere from their ‘main’ job.

Before starting your side hustle it is important to be aware of what your employment contract says about taking on work outside your working hours, as there may be a conflict of interest.

According to Claire Klassen, Consumer Financial Education Specialist at Momentum Metropolitan and Hiten Keshave, working and maintaining a side hustle can be tricky, and requires effective time management.

“If you get the go-ahead to start a side hustle, then you need to set boundaries and practice self-discipline so that you don’t neglect your daily duties.”

“Balancing your full-time job and side hustle, won’t always be easy, particularly in the beginning, but managing your time wisely using techniques like timeboxing can help. Time management is one of the key challenges because a failure to dedicate specific time to getting the wheels off the ground in the early stages of a side hustle can lead to limited traction and frustration,” she said.

We look at some key factors you need to consider before starting your business:

Play to your strengths

It is important to very early on ascertain what you are good at, and what your strengths are and think about how you can leverage them to your advantage. Additionally doing something you are passionate about will make it easier for you to push on even when you are faced with challenges.

“First, you need to examine what you can offer as a service that comes naturally to you and that you are good at and passionate about. This approach will ensure that there is little to no capital required to hire a resource, train the resource, and pay their salary,” said Klassen.

Embrace these tough times

The challenging economic landscape should not deter you from starting a business. Your product or service could be exactly what consumers are looking for. It is often during tough times that creative and innovative solutions are required.

Starting during a time of economic uncertainty also means you are faced with fewer competitors entering the market, which will give you an advantage in the long term.

Create a strong support system

Starting a business is not easy and will take a toll on both your mental and physical well-being. This is why you need to know that you have a strong group of people you can rely on to support you when it is needed. Mentorship is also vital to the success of any entrepreneur.

Nhlanhla Dlamini, the founder and CEO of Maneli Pets, which supplies pet treats to over 12 countries all over the world, reiterated the importance of having a mentor.

Founder and CEO of Maneli Pets, Nhlanhla Dlamini.

“Find someone or a group of people to support you along the way, those in your personal space, at home as well as your friends and professionally.”

“My dad had a small shop, still has a small shop in Soweto but I never really spent much time in the shop learning from him the ins and outs. What I could have done is found other entrepreneurs or business owners who had started businesses themselves and figured out what were the big mistakes they made in the first 3 or 4 years, and what I could do to stay on course correctly. (You) don’t learn in the saddle for the first time as an entrepreneur,” said Dlamini.

You can also leverage your friendship and family connections to support you or spread the word about your service or offering to their networks so as to help you expand your reach.

Use social media to your advantage

Social media affords everyone the opportunity to advertise for free. Even paid social media advertising is a great way to spread the word about your business as it is not as expensive as traditional advertising channels.

“Use social media platforms to advertise your business to create a following and interest in your product or service. Social media followers or members of community WhatsApp groups will share their opinions, and you can use the opportunity to send out a survey to determine what type of service is lacking in the area,” said Klassen.

Be ready to fail

Failure presents you with an opportunity to learn, what is important is to fail forward. Take whatever lessons you can from your failures so as to avoid repeating the same mistakes in future. Every entrepreneur has failed at some point or another the difference is that they did not give up but instead took the learnings from their failure.
